Tate and Lyle is spreading its Lyle's Golden Syrup brand into new territory with the arrival of a new ice cream.
Dairy Ice Cream Made with Lyle's Golden Syrup, produced by Cheshire-based company Granelli-McDermott, is set to hit freezers in September and has already been listed in Asda and Iceland.
Its arrival marks another move in the iconic brand's expansion strategy, which has also seen it reach the biscuit fixture with McVitie's Creams (The Grocer, June 28 2003, p57). Meanwhile, McVitie's Cake Company has expanded its existing Golden Syrup cake range with the launch of cup cakes last week.
Virginia Lana, Lyle's franchise development manager, said Lyle's 119-year history made it a strong brand and the company intended to capitalise on its heritage.
"We intend to grow the range through new product innovation and joint ventures under the Lyle's brand over the next five years, making it available in new formats and keeping it relevant to today's lifestyles," she added.
Packaging on the new ice cream line features Golden Syrup's dark green livery and the familiar Lyle the Lion logo.
Gwyn Jones, MD at Granelli-McDermott, said his company's century of ice cream expertise meant it also had a strong heritage. He said an Indian summer was predicted this year, so the new product would not miss out on hot weather sales.
