Greggs has saved more than six million meals from going to waste across the UK through its partnership with surplus food marketplace Too Good To Go.
The food-to-go chain first partnered with Too Good To Go in 2021, offering ‘Surprise Bags’ of unsold items such as bakes, sandwiches and sweet treats at a reduced price.
Surplus food can now be saved from more than 2,000 Greggs shops across the UK. In September, the bakery chain expanded the partnership by launching hot food ‘Greggs Grab Bags’.
Available for collection daily, they include products such as Chicken Goujons, Cheese Bites and Potato Wedges from £2.99.
To mark the six million meals milestone, users who purchase a Greggs Too Good To Go Surprise Bag between 20 April and 27 April can enter a prize draw for the chance to win a £50 Greggs gift card and a £50 Too Good To Go voucher.
“Reaching six million Surprise Bags saved is a fantastic milestone for our partnership with Too Good To Go,” said a Greggs spokesperson. “It reflects the commitment of our shop teams and customers to reducing food waste, while ensuring good food is enjoyed rather than wasted.
“We’re delighted to celebrate with our customers by giving them the chance to win and continue enjoying their Greggs favourites.”
Too Good To Go UK & Ireland country director Chelsea Kerr said: “This partnership shows the real impact we can have when we work together to prevent food waste at scale. Every Surprise Bag saved not only saves great food but also helps reduce unnecessary carbon emissions.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate this achievement with our community through this competition and thank them for being part of the journey.”
The partnership supports the ‘Greggs Pledge’, the company’s sustainability strategy, which includes a commitment to reduce food surplus by 25% compared with 2018 levels.
Greggs has partnered with research and innovation foundation Nesta to develop a method for measuring the healthiness of food sales.
The collaboration will see Greggs report performance against this measure and set a target to deliver improvement by the end of 2030.
