When The Grocer caught up with Mushtaq Hussain this week, he was in between stores. He completed the sale of his 2M’s store at Selly Oak in Birmingham a week ago, but delays in the legal process meant he was not expecting to take over his new store until today (Saturday).
While he waited for the lawyers to complete their work, Hussain helped the new owner of the 2M’s store get to grips with his new business and began making plans to develop his next property.
Having built up the 2M’s business, he had been searching for another store with growth potential for an owner prepared to invest in it. He found what he was looking for in a parade of shops in South Yardley, Birmingham.
Hussain said he was attracted to the property by its location and good parking facilities. Importantly, it also had space at the rear into which it could be extended.
He has also acquired the two properties adjoining the store and plans to knock them
through to create a larger, modern c-store.
However, this development will have to wait until the current tenants have moved out and planning permission has been granted.
Nevertheless Hussain plans to invest up to £60,000 in immediate improvements, such as replacement shelving and the installation of an air conditioning system, which he believes will help to grow the store’s turnover.
The meat and dairy section will receive a new refrigeration system and fruit and vegetables will be chilled for the first time.
Finally, updated lighting systems inside and out will help to make the store brighter and more attractive.
