Lea & Perrins is considering an application for Protected Geographical Indication status for Worcestershire sauce in the wake of the Sudan 1 recall.
The company, which has 99% of the UK-branded Worcester sauce market, says it has been “caught in the crossfire” by the Sudan 1 scare, instigated by a rogue batch of Crosse & Blackwell Worcester sauce made by rival Premier Foods.
External affairs manager Gary Hayes said: “We have been talking to our local MP Michael Foster and to our legal people to look at whether there is a case for a PGI or other protection. We’re not saying it’s impossible to make a decent sauce outside Worcester, but there are some inferior products out there.”
Lea & Perrins is one of several companies set to meet the FSA to review the way the recall was handled, he added. “We have issues with the way this was communicated to the public.”
The Grocer has a new editorial marketing team. Former drinks editor Claire Hu has been appointed marketing editor, replacing Simon Mowbray who has become news editor. Stefan Chomka joins the marketing team as Focus on Features editor. He joins from The Grocer’s sister publication Food Manufacture.
