Lynas Foodservice has acquired Edinburgh-based foodservice wholesaler JB Foods to strengthen its service and supply for Scottish caterers.

JB Foods is a family-run business with more than 60 years’ experience delivering speciality ingredients, grocery essentials, dairy, frozen and non-food products to restaurants and professional kitchens. For the year to 30 November 2024, the wholesaler delivered a turnover of £32.7m, a jump from £20.2m the year prior.

Lynas Foodservice, which had a turnover of £155m as of 2020, is a third-generation wholesaler employing more than 600 staff and supplying more than 5,000 customers.

JB Foods will continue to trade under its own name as part of Lynas Foodservice while its leadership, including MD Lee Brown and commercial director Charlotte Brown, will remain in place.

“Lynas and JB Foods not only share a heritage as long-standing family-run businesses, but also a customer-first ethos,” said Lynas Foodservice MD Andrew Lynas. “JB Foods is known for its focus on quality, Scottish provenance and customer service, all of which align closely with Lynas’ vision.”

He said that bringing the two businesses together will provide ”the scale, infrastructure and Scottish warehousing capacity to deliver even better availability, broader choice and a stronger service for caterers right across the country”.

“This is a significant step in strengthening our long-term commitment to Scotland and supporting future growth,” Lynas added.

Lee Brown said: “This move allows us to build on the range and service our customers know us for while benefiting from the scale, availability and product range that Lynas brings. It strengthens what we do today and lets us deliver the same personal, trusted service our customers rely on.”

Both Lynas Foodservice and JB Foods are already members of foodservice buying group Caterforce, which offers five exclusive own brands available only to its members. The pair said this link will “create a natural alignment” for them and their customers.
