A magazine called Gay UK is launching from Hallmark Communications on February 13. The fortnightly title will cover news, entertainment and gossip and hopes to achieve mass appeal. The cover price is £1.50 and distribution is by Odyssey.

n Taking it to the max
Dennis Publishing is aiming to take its men's magazine Maxim "one step on from a successful brand" after appointing a new media agency, Naked, to work on the direction of the magazine and accelerate its UK success.

n Publishers defend lurid'
The Periodical Publishers Association is preparing a response to a Commons question tabled by Tory MP Andrew Selous. He said men's lifestyle magazines should be moved nearer the top shelf of newsagents to prevent children being exposed to lurid'' covers of titles such as FHM and GQ.
The PPA said it hoped to reassure Selous that magazine covers were subject to legal provisions and voluntary agreements between publishers and retailers.

n New York's the prize
Elle Girl magazine has teamed up with Bloomsbury Publishing to launch a joint Gossip Girl texting campaign in March, offering readers of Elle Girl the chance to win a trip to New York. The publishers' partnership will also lead to a series of Gossip Girl books due to be launched in March.

Garden News will carry covermounts on issues that go on sale on February 12, 19 and 26.

n Guidelines reviewed
The Periodical Publishers Association of Newspaper and Magazine Wholesalers is updating the industry's Best Practice Guidelines for wholesale stock control and returns processing to ensure they reflect the introduction of the latest technology.
