Northern Foods is closing its Trafford Park Bakery in Manchester with the loss of 690 jobs.
The site produces a range of chilled savoury products and last year recorded pre-tax losses of more than £3m.
Northern Foods said that employee consultations had begun, with a proposed phased closure of the site expected to be completed by December.
In May this year Northern Foods put a number of businesses up for sale, including its chilled pastry products division, as part of a business review.
Northern Foods said: “The decision reflects Northern Foods' focus on improving the overall performance of the business and is being progressed as this time in preparation for the disposal of the pastry category.”
