John Knights, founder of Knights European Foods and a pioneer of chilled foods, has died aged 64.
After working for Northern Dairies, CWS, Brazils, and Winterbotham Darby, Knights set up his company in 1971, selling pâté from the back of his wife's Mini Traveller.
The company became a major chilled food distributor with customers that included Waitrose, Budgens and Sainsbury. It also operated factories producing pizzas and pâté.
When it was sold to Hazlewood in 1984, it was operating from nine sites and employed 500 people.
