A random sample of independents around the country showed widely different reactions to the greater freedom they now have in their freezer cabinets.
L&F Jones runs 16 stores in Wiltshire under the Jones Day and Night banner. Joint md Nick Jones said: "We deal with an Italian company Sidoli from Cardiff. They wanted exclusivity in their cabinets, but we have come to an agreement about stocking some of Wall's top lines in their freezers.
"We stopped using Wall's a couple of years ago because, in our opinion, we found we could not get what we wanted when we wanted it. In the peak season Sidoli covers all our stores three times a week."
Roy Cowhig runs a single store under the Londis fascia in south Manchester.
He said the decision by the Competition Commission has given him the freedom to put products where he wants to.
"We have Nestlé and Wall's freezers. We used to have Mars as well but after a refit we did not have room for three. I carry Londis own label and this has stopped any arguments about it.
"I don't want to be tied down to a single supplier. I like to keep them on their toes."
Chris Ward runs two Spar stores in west Wales and has never had a real problem with the freezers and does not expect this to change.
"The reps turn a blind eye to what we sell from the cabinets. If anyone has said anything then we have said fine, take out the freezer we will get someone else's.
"We have products from Nestlé, mainly. We will stock products which are heavily advertised. There is no brand loyalty for lollies. We will probably take the opportunity to put in some more Wall's products.
"A lot of suppliers forget we are their customers. There has to be freedom of choice because we can always go to someone else."
