A report by Health Which? has revealed just how much organic sales have boomed in the past few years as an increasingly health conscious public woke up to perceived health benefits.
The Consumers' Association survey of 2,000 people found 29% are replacing some staple foods with organic versions.
But Health Which? pointed out that there was still little hard evidence to show organics were the healthier option.
Just over 60% of those surveyed gave health as the main reason they bought organics, and more than half said it was because the food was not treated with pesticides.
Another 46% believed organic foods contained more vitamins and minerals than non organic foods.
GM foods were a concern with 9% of the poll buying organics for this reason.
But the biggest barrier to a greater take up of organics was price, with 45% of people not choosing to eat them for that reason.
