Pip & Nut is taking on Nutella with the launch of its own Chocolate Hazelnut Spread.
The “rich, indulgent” NPD is 63% nuts, comprising of 39.2% Californian almonds and 24% hazelnuts. It also contains sunflower seeds, agave syrup, cocoa mass (7%), vegetable oils and sea salt.
By comparison, Nutella contains sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts (13%), skimmed milk powder (8.7%), fat-reduced cocoa (7.4%), soya lecithin and vanillin.
Pip & Nut’s plant-based spread contains 9.1g sugar per 100g, which is less than one-sixth of the amount of sugar in 100g of Nutella (56.3g).
What’s more, the cocoa in it is “100% traceable and ethically sourced” from Tony’s Open Chain.
Available in a 165g jar (rsp: £3.50) and 400g tub (rsp: £7.65), the NPD has already hit Sainsbury’s shelves, and will roll into Ocado, Whole Foods Market and Amazon over the coming weeks.
“This launch is an exciting next step for Pip & Nut as we continue to expand and innovate,” said Pip & Nut founder and CEO Pip Murray.
“Just as we transformed the nut butter category over the last 10 years, we are ready to bring our dedication to healthier, more sustainable options to chocolate spreads.
“With more NPD on the way, we’re thrilled to keep growing and offering consumers even more tasty, responsible options,” Murray added.
It follows the launch of Pip & Nut’s Stuffed Oat Bars in July, which debuted in Original, Chocolate and Apple & Cinnamon variants.
