Sfoglietta by Puffpizza

Puffpizza’s Sfoglietta are inspired by classic Sardinian pizzette

PuffPizza, a startup selling Sardinian-inspired pastry pizzas, has won £75k in seed funding, furthering its mission to “redefine frozen convenience food”.

The brand’s puff-pastry ‘Sfogliettas’, which bake from frozen in minutes, are inspired by classic Sardinian pizzette and make use of classic mediterranean ingredients including capers, tuna, anchovies and chorizo in six recipes.

The capital is the first awarded from investor Scale Venture Partners’ new £300k Scale Ventures Fund, and will help PuffPizza expand its reach across retail, foodservice and on-the-go channels, while expanding its product range, according to PuffPizza founder Nicola Cossu.

“I’m deeply grateful to Scale Ventures and our investors for believing in our vision. Their backing is more than capital,  it’s a vote of confidence in our mission to redefine premium frozen convenience food,” he said.

“This investment is a turning point for PuffPizza. It gives us the momentum to scale faster and bring Sfogliettas to more tables across the UK.”

Alongside capital investment, Cossu will receive coaching and mentoring from the Scale team, headed up by chairman Andrew Morris.

“Nico is exactly the kind of creative, ambitious founder Scale Ventures was created to support,” Morris said.

“We don’t just invest in a product; we back the individual behind it. Nico has taken a distinctive Sardinian concept and turned it into a premium proposition with clear appeal for consumers and retailers alike.

“PuffPizza is the first recipient of capital from our £300,000 Scale Ventures fund, and our ambition is to support a pipeline of founders who can build enduring, high-quality UK brands. We’re excited to help PuffPizza scale and to play a part in the next chapter of growth for this quality-driven UK food business.”

PuffPizza’s products are currently supplied through a network of independent retailers, hospitality venues and foodservice; it is currently in discussions with further grocery and foodservice providers.
