Skillsmart is giving retailers a last chance to comment on the training strategy it has devised to tackle skills shortages and lack of central accreditation in the industry.
The final date for feedback is February and all wishing to respond can visit Skillsmart’s website, www.Skillsmart.com, to access the proposals.
The training body, which is part of the Retail Sector Skills Council, is creating a database of competencies which could be used to train all retail staff. It would cover three general areas - retail specific knowledge, qualifications common to most industries, such as finance or HR functions, and broader work skills. Retailers are being invited to help shape this resource.
Beverley Paddey, Skillsmart head of qualification strategy, said that once responses had been received, a first step would be to set up a steering group to map out core skills.
She added: “We will also be looking to employ a full-time qualification manager who can review standards and develop training programmes.”
