Spar is to clamp down on store standards as competition in the convenience sector intensifies.
In June it will launch a scheme to cover minimum legal requirements, millennium store compliance and standards.
The scheme will have two strands - mandatory Minimum Operational Standards (MOS) and the more advanced Comprehensive Operational Standards.
Failure to comply with the former will lead to withdrawal from the organisation.
“We clearly need to raise our game and address the challenges,” said Spar retail director Steve Blackmore. “We need a more professional operation and more demanding legislative framework.”
The plan is to be led by the local Spar guilds and developed in conjunction with retailers.
It will include implementation of schemes such as national promotions, brand and fresh food initiatives as well as general store standards.
