Jersey Mike’s, one of the fastest-growing sub sandwich brands in the US and a direct competitor of Subway, is opening its first UK restaurant this year.

The brand’s debut store, which will be located on Argyll Street in London’s West End, is due to open later this autumn, with a further three restaurants opening in central London shortly after.

Jersey Mike’s said these four restaurants would form the “launchpad” for its wider European expansion, with the brand planning to open hundreds of sites across the UK and Ireland.

The food-to-go chain was founded in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey and now operates more than 3,300 locations across the US and Canada.

The brand’s proposition centres on made-to-order subs with meats and cheeses sliced in-store, with fresh vegetables and bread baked throughout the day.

“Jersey Mike’s has always been about making a great sub, taking care of our customers and giving back to the communities we’re part of,” said founder and chairman Peter Cancro.

“I’m excited to bring that same spirit to the UK. We’ve spent decades building this brand in America, and now we’re ready to introduce a whole new audience to what we mean when we say ‘a Sub Above’.”
