Increasing supermarket demand for fresh herbs means Israel is planning to increase its exports to the UK this year by over 20%, said Bezalel Madmon, Agrexco international product manager.
He expects total production to reach a record 6,000 tonnes, of which the UK, the largest market, will receive a third. The marketing group represents 115 specialist producers.
The sector is still expanding because flower growers have seen the crop is more profitable.
Madmon believes there is potential to reach 8,000 tonnes over the next five years, but only if the industry continues to maintain its high levels of quality backed with full safety and traceability standards which will allow it to compete with Morocco and Spain.
