Adam Leyland will be stepping down from his role as editor-in-chief of The Grocer, after 20 years of heading up the grocery industry bible. Leyland will continue working with The Grocer, taking on the position of editor-at-large while also working freelance in consulting, editing, writing and training.

Over the past two decades, Leyland has led some of the brand’s most significant innovations, including the expansion of its digital products, the reinvention of the Grocer 33 service and the growth of The Grocer Gold Awards into one of the industry’s flagship events.

“Adam has made an outstanding contribution to The Grocer, helping shape and build its reputation as a trusted source of insight and analysis,” said William Reed CEO Tracy De Groose.

“His passion for the food and drink industry, commitment to quality journalism and drive to innovate have helped shape the brand into the leading voice it is today.”

Leyland said: “It’s been a huge privilege to have led The Grocer for all these years and I’m immensely proud of my role in its success. I want to publicly thank my brilliant team for their endless skill, rigour and dedication in delivering and developing incredible journalism and events for this fantastic industry we serve. I will miss them enormously while hoping that, as editor-at-large, I will stay in touch.

“I would also like to thank the many other colleagues who’ve helped me and The Grocer. It’s not been easy, with the industry facing immense challenges, not to mention the existential threat we’ve faced from the decline in recruitment advertising, free-to-air rivals, the rise of social media and now generative AI. But The Grocer continues to thrive and buck the market.”

From a content and editorial leadership perspective, Charlotte Hardie, managing director, retail & grocery content, will continue to lead The Grocer, Convenience Store, Forecourt Trader and Retail Week content teams, and will set the vision for these brands to deliver on William Reed’s Food for Growth strategy.
