One of the oldest grocery stores in the UK is being put up for sale. Established in 1813 by Sarah Gove, who later married John Trump, the 2,000 sq ft Trumps store in Sidmouth, Devon, retains many of its original fittings, including some ornate wooden wall cabinets and shelving.
The current owner, Geoff Van Hegan, has owned the business since 2001, but is planning to move to New Zealand, said Paul Heather, who is negotiating the sale of the store through estate agent Christie & Co.
He said: “Trumps is renowned for the quality of its products
and service and new owners would be inheriting the goodwill of such a long-established business, as well as acquiring a character period property with a main-street position in this popular east Devon town.”
