Vertical farming leader Fischer Farms has launched New Eden, a new consumer-facing brand of bagged salad leaves.
The range includes three SKUs – Burger Lettuce (rsp: £1.60/80g), Zesty Mixed Salad (rsp: £1.60/80g) and Pea Shoots (rsp: £1.60/80g) – which have launched on Ocado.
The products are grown at Fischer Farms’ Norwich site and are expected to have wider retail distribution later this year.
“New Eden is about creating a better future for fresh produce – food that is good for people, planet and palates,” said Jon Cummings, Fisher Farms commercial director. “By growing indoors in perfect conditions, we’re able to offer consistent quality, clean leaves and incredible flavour, while dramatically reducing the resources needed to grow them.”
New Eden’s debut in Ocado represents a major milestone for Fischer Farms and forms part of the company’s long-term mission to deliver sustainable, climate-resilient farming that can operate anywhere.
According to the company, “every leaf receives precisely what it needs to thrive, including the ideal balance of light, nutrients and climate, without any pesticides or herbicides”.
Vertical farms also use less water, require no soil, and do not require as much land as conventional farms, Fischer Farms said.
There is also the added benefit for consumers, the business said, that the leaves stay fresher for longer and have fewer food miles.
Cummings added: “Launching on Ocado is an exciting step in bringing this new approach directly to consumers.”
