The Daily Telegraph: The Japanese are returning to their staple diet of rice as imported Western foodstuffs soar in price, wrote the Daily Telegraph. Japanese consumers ate 135lb 6oz of rice on average over the past 12 months – a pound more than the previous year and the first increase in more than a decade.

The Independent: Efforts to convince landlords to switch to monthly rental payments from the current status quo of quarterly billings have received a boost, according to The Independent. Dail Mail: Kangaroos could be reared on a large scale for food to cut the methane produced by Australia’s sheep and cattle herds, following a study cited by the Daily Mirror. Sheep and cows currently produce 11% of Australia’s greenhouse gases. “Using kangaroos to produce low-emission meat is an option and could have global application,” researcher Dr George Wilson was quoted as saying.

The Sun: Morrisons paid television personality Richard Hammond £750,000 for four days’ work to star in a series of adverts, The Sun has claimed. The Top Gear host earned £175,000 a day for filming the commercials. Adverts for Morrisons, which declined to comment, have previously featured the likes of football pundit Alan Hansen and TV celebrity Denise van Outen.

Sunday Express: Poaching is on the rise in the UK, the Sunday Express reported, with organised gangs targeting game including grouse, hare and pheasant. An estimated 50,000 deer a year are being killed and sold on the black market by poachers reportedly using jam sandwiches as bait. “The price of venison has increased, which is starting to fuel demand,” said Duncan Thomas of Lancashire Police.
