World of Sweets has recalled two of its Dubai-style chocolate products due to the presence of salmonella, according to a bulletin issued by the Food Standards Agency.
The affected products are Dubai Style Crunchy Knafeh and Pistachio Milk Chocolate, and Alyan Dubai Style Chocolate Truffles.
The recall applies to all best before dates on the 100g Dubai Style Crunchy Knafeh and Pistachio Milk Chocolate with product code 318591, and the 120g Alyan Dubai Style Chocolate Truffles with product code 319456.
Salmonella, which can cause fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, was found in the chocolates, the FSA said.
The agency advised that consumers experiencing these symptoms should stay away from work, school or nursery until they had been symptom-free for at least 48 hours to avoid passing the infection on to others.
Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores selling the affected products, explaining to shoppers why the products are being recalled and what to do if they have bought them.
Consumers that have bought the products, should not eat them and instead return them to the point of purchase for a full refund, the FSA advised.
World of Sweets has been approached for comment.
The recall comes after the FSA found widespread problems with Dubai-style chocolates in its latest retail surveillance programme, with only one of 45 samples passing all testing and labelling requirements.
Salmonella had been detected during testing of one batch of Alyan Dubai Style Crunchy Knafeh and Pistachio Milk Chocolate 100g, a spokesperson for World of Sweets told The Grocer.
As a precaution, the supplier had decided to recall all Alyan products, they added.
“Alyan manufactures these products in Turkey and holds BRCGS Grade A+ accreditation for food safety. World of Sweets imports and distributes the products within the UK,” they said.
“We are working urgently with our retail customers to remove the products from sale and inform consumers. We are also working closely with Alyan and the relevant authorities while the investigation into the cause continues.”
