The Co-operative Group has hired two more execs from its supermarket rivals, as new food CEO Steve Murrells continues to shake up his management team.

The latest scalp is Andrew Mann, currently Sainsbury’s director of insight and loyalty, who is appointed to the new role of customer director.

It has also named former Asda IT director Howard Reed, who was most recently group IT and change director at fashion retailer New Look, to another new role, as food chief information officer.

“Having the right management team around me is really important - to get even closer to the customer, understand what we need to do and start to build some momentum into the business,” Murrells told The Grocer.

As part of the restructure, chief operating officer Sean Toal will now lead the stores, service delivery and supply chain teams, with promotions for Cheryl Marshall and Mark Hale to fill two newly created positions as service delivery director and supply chain director respectively.

The Co-op has made a number of raids on supermarkets since Murrells joined in June. In September, Ian Martin joined from Asda as head of commercial trading for beers, wines and spirits, tobacco & frozen food.

Matt Hood, who was group food sourcing director at Tesco, joined a month later as head of commercial trading for dairy, chilled, prepared food and protein.

CJ Antal Smith, who was category trading director for emerging markets at Asda, also joins next month as head of the society’s core, impulse and non-edible grocery categories.

“I am confident each member of the enlarged team has the right mix of experience, expertise and leadership capabilities to ensure we deliver our goals,” Murrells added.
