Roger Burnley has a new role in Sainsbury’s management reshuffle

Sainsbury’s has reshuffled its senior management team as it prepares for the departure of CEO Justin King this summer, with seven directors given new roles.

Roger Burnley, who is currently MD of general merchandise, clothing and logistics, has been made retail and operations director. He will now lead a combined team of supermarkets, convenience and logistics. Burnley joined Sainsbury’s in March 2006 and has also worked for Matalan and Asda.

Retail director Helen Buck, who has worked at Sainsbury’s since 2005, becomes business development director. She will be responsible for developing Sainsbury’s beyond its core business, covering Mobile by Sainsbury’s, Sainsbury’s Energy and Sainsbury’s Online.

Sainsbury’s Online will now be headed by Robbie Feather, who moves up from the role of business unit development director for general merchandise and entertainment. Feather, who joined from John Lewis in 2011, will report to Buck.

Business unit director for grocery Paul Mills-Hicks, meanwhile, joins the operating board as food commercial director covering supply chain, own label, space & formats and food. He has worked at Sainsbury’s for more than 10 years.

Business unit director for clothing James Brown, who joined in 2011, becomes director of non-food trading; and director of store development Dean Clegg, who has worked at Sainsbury’s since 2005, becomes director of property.

Sainsbury’s Bank CEO Peter Griffiths completes the new-look team. He joins the operating board following Sainsbury’s acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in the bank from Lloyds Banking Group in February this year. He has led the bank since November 2012.

“Mike Coupe and I are working closely to ensure a strong transition as we move towards my departure on 9 July,” King said.

“A key part of our success over the last 10 years has been the strength of our leadership team at all levels of our business, and our focus on developing talent from within, ensuring we have a great blend of innovative thinking and experience.

“The changes will strengthen an already strong leadership team and allow us even greater success in the future,” he added.
