What's the best thing about working there? The honesty and integrity of the team and the strong desire to succeed in everything we do together. There is no arrogance, just ambition to grow a successful business with successful people.

How does the company differ from its rivals? We have a flat top team structure that enables executive decisions to be made quickly. We offer local produce in our stores and even use local businesses to maintain our stores wherever possible. We also run promotions in-store, which generate cash for local charities and put the 1p profit from each carrier bag into the charity bank.

Is there a definable company culture? Honesty, integrity, and a respectful attitude from all Haldanes colleagues and suppliers.

If the company were a car what would it be? It would be a Mini Cooper S. It is small and compact, but gets there fast and offers most of the BMW features just on a smaller scale!

What's the training like? We are looking at starting a graduate training programme next September and we will be offering our colleagues the chance to take up independent learning accounts to help them towards NVQ and SVQ qualifications. We will also have in-store training programmes.

What's your proudest achievement? The first store openings, the enthusiasm of our colleagues and the way everyone has gelled quickly as a team.

What's the most important HR issue you are dealing with at the moment? Making sure our colleagues feel supported in the move from Somerfield/Co-op to Haldanes. A lot of these people have been in an OFT store awaiting news of who was taking them on for nearly 12 months. We need to integrate them quickly and make them feel valued.
