Poundland is to open its first store in Northern Ireland next month, with five more to follow by Christmas.

The first site, in Belfast, is expected to be open by 8 October, said CEO Jim McCarthy.

"We are very excited about taking Poundland to Northern Ireland and it's another important step for us as part of our growth strategy," he said. "We are confident that consumers in Northern Ireland will love our unique and simple retail concept. As well as finding the right locations, we're also reviewing the product mix to ensure we have the right product offering. We are keen to source from as many local suppliers as possible."

Poundland's expansion on the mainland was forging ahead quickly, he said, with 12 stores to open in the next month, bringing the total to 240.

Poundland was continuing to add new products to its stores, added McCarthy. The latest product to be trialled in five stores was the National Lottery.

"It's too early in the trial to say how it's going but with draws priced at £1 it fits in well with our offer," he added. "It could potentially go to all of our stores, but first we have to check whether it creates big queues in stores and holds up the tills."

A new chilled range, that includes milk, cheese, bacon, sausages, margarine and Cheestrings, provided by Kerry Foods, is also being rolled out across Poundland's stores.
