Why: Best known for its potato crisps, Burts Chips has billed its new lentil-based bagged snack as ideal for consumers looking for an indulgent but healthy alternative that “tastes as good as traditional crisps”. Available in three flavours - Sour Cream & Chive, Thai Sweet Chilli and Lightly Salted - they are free from hydrogenated fat,­­ artificial flavourings and colourings. Each 20g ­multipack bag contains 99 calories and 40% less fat than Burts Sea Salt Potato Chips.

Consumer verdict: Part of Burts range of lentil-based snacks, these were considered an interesting concept pre-trial. Many testers were impressed after trying the product, with the “crisp, crunchy” texture particularly singled out for praise. Some considered the flavour to be lacking and thought the product would work better as a dip accompaniment. Viewed as reasonably priced and a healthier option, nearly a third of testers said they would ­consider buying these at least fortnightly.
