At 89p, Morrisons' bagels (five stars) were not only the cheapest, but also came up trumps on the taste front thanks to their great fresh aroma, soft texture and strong flavour.

Sainsbury's bagels (four stars) also smelt good, but were slightly tougher than Morrisons' and although they had a pleasant taste, they could have done with more flavour. Waitrose's offering (three stars) had a paler appearance than its rivals'. It was bland in flavour, but had a nice and fluffy texture inside.

Asda's (two stars) line was soft and airy, but tore apart a bit too easily and did not taste or smell of much. Similarly, Tesco's product (two stars) lacked in aroma and was too crumbly, although it tasted fine - if a little flavourless.
