Waitrose (five stars) offered the most expensive baguette, at 59p, and it showed. Not only was it the softest of them all, it had a light, fluffy texture and a pleasantly sweet taste.

At 37p, Morrisons' (four stars) was much cheaper. Although it had a slightly tougher crust than Waitrose's, it got the thumbs up for its strong aroma and flavoursome taste. Sainsbury's (three stars) was the toughest and a little on the dry side, but its great smell and strong, moreish taste more than made up for it.

You couldn't really fault Tesco's (two stars) effort, but it didn't stand out from the crowd. Its texture was not too tough and it tasted fine, but the flavour was weak. Similarly, although not offensive, Asda's offering (two stars) lacked flavour and was too dry.
