Asda's mince pie (one star) was the worst. With a very sharp filling and a weak structure to the pastry, it was also noticeably smaller than the others. Waitrose's offering (two stars) didn't impress either. Although it looked good, the taste just wasn't there and the alcohol was overpowering.

Morrisons offered a tastier option (three stars) with a good filling to pastry ratio, but it crumbled easily. With a moist texture and a sweet tang, Sainsbury's pie (four stars) was more impressive. It held together well and was filled nicely.

An attractive and generously filled offering put Tesco (five stars) top this week. The pie had a good balance of flavours and the pastry had a good bite, and didn't leave your mouth dry.
