Hello Johnny. The digging of the pond was one of a series of fundraising challenges undertaken by the UK food and hospitality sectors as part of the Food for Good campaign to raise funds for Farm Africa’s work. Food for Good raised over £500,000 in 2013 alone. All the participants covered 100% of their own costs and gave their time to raise money for Farm Africa’s work. The important principle is that Farm Africa works with farming communities of all types across eastern Africa to help them move out of poverty by improving their yields and developing businesses. As farmers build greater income security, they can not only invest in their families by paying for school and medical costs but they also have the confidence to re-invest in their businesses. We are delighted to see that this is exactly what has happened with the Afula group who have chosen to invest their profits into developing another three ponds that will give them a good harvest into the future.
