There's no doubt about it - consumers love pickled onions. Recent research shows that consumers talk passionately about their love for pickled vegetables and particularly pickled onions. But, perversely, this is in contrast to the current market position. Still the leading force in the pickles sector, sales of pickled onions have recently dropped slightly.

Much of the current growth of the category is coming through new vegetable extensions such as peppers, artichokes and chillies, as a Mediterranean influence extends to the British consumer, particularly through the summer months.

However, this reflects more that consumers are looking for stronger, more exciting and interesting flavours and we feel this will be the key to revitalising the category.

Diverse flavours are also dominating the relish market with jalapeño flavours reflecting the consumer trend towards spicier flavours and breathing new life into what was a declining category.
