Sainsbury’s is to open a new one million square foot distribution centre at Daventry International rail freight terminal in early 2015.

The DC, which will be managed by DHL Supply Chain, will create 900 jobs and will handle the retailer’s general merchandise, including cookware, homeware and domestic appliances.

Eco-friendly initiatives will also feature heavily in the DC, including LED lighting, rainwater harvesting and vehicle charging points.

“This depot will provide us with a central location to support our growing general merchandise business, which is growing at twice the rate of food,” said Sainsbury’s logistics director Richard Fleming.
