Sainsbury has snapped up former Somerfield meat buyer Tom Harvey to fill the role of chicken buyer.
Harvey joins the retailer after two and a half years at Somerfield where he bought fish, poultry and red meat products.
Starting as a fish buyer, Harvey launched the category planning process and the first Scottish fish range at Somerfield.
In April 2003 he took over poultry and added-value poultry, where, according to Harvey, he restructured the supply base on chicken to deliver what was at the time the single-biggest business saving through a tender ever achieved at Somerfield. He also introduced Somerfield’s first premium So Good range of West Country corn-fed chicken and the retailer’s first range of Scottish chicken.
In June 2004, Harvey moved across to red meat buying.
In this role he launched the So Good West Country lamb range in February 2005 and Somerfield’s latest range of So Good West Country beef.
Prior to Somerfield, Harvey worked in corporate event consulting and management.
Harvey added: “All of the suppliers I work with at Sainsbury are well known to me, as I have worked with all of them during the time I spent at Somerfield.”
