Leading soup producers have pledged to cut salt levels amid criticism from health watchdogs that some is “as salty as seawater”.
New Covent Garden Foods and Campbell were among several manufacturers accused by Consensus Action on Salt (CASH) of ladling too much salt into their products, with New Covent Garden’s Our Best Chicken variant found to contain 6.25g of salt per 250g bowl. The recomended daily allowance for adults is less than 6g a day.
New Covent Garden Foods said it had an improvement programme which included reducing salt levels. Campbell said it was “working with consumers” to reduce the level of sodium in some products without affecting taste.
