Tesco is to switch to UK sourcing for all of its Finest bacon and gammon.
The retailer said the move would be a boost to struggling British pig farmers. Finest bacon was one of its bestselling premium meat ranges, with volume sales up 58% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, Finest Christmas gammon went into Tesco outlets this week, with projected sales of 120 tonnes over the Christmas and New Year period.
Tesco commercial director Steve Murrells said: “It will now be British farmers who are benefiting from strong sales of Finest bacon. Premium products sourced in the UK are doing fantastically well, and that clearly demonstrates how much British farmers have to gain by concentrating on the value-added market.”
