Tesco has quadrupled its halal range to cater for the growing Muslim market.

For the past couple of years Tesco has stocked a range of 10 meat products in a dozen London-based stores. But last week it launched a range of 45 products in 43 stores across the UK, including Birmingham, Bradford and Leeds. The products will be merchandised together in a designated bay.

"There are 2.5 million Muslims in the UK and we want to cater for everyone's needs and provide the Muslim population with a complete shopping trip," said Elena Connell, Tesco ethnic foods buying manager.

"We wanted to make it easy for customers to find halal products and have ensured the range is not located next to any unsuitable products such as alcohol ," she added.

The extended halal offer includes more cooked meat and sausages, a range of chocolate and jelly confectionery and an ambient range of condiments and dressings, cooking sauces and noodles.

Suppliers are mainly based in France and Turkey, but 20% of the range has been developed by UK-based halal supplier Mumtaz.

The move follows Asda's launch of 55 halal lines in 30 stores last August.
