Tesco is to let shoppers choose which charities will cash in on proceeds from the Scottish and Welsh carrier bag levies.

Over the next two weeks, Tesco said it would ask consumers to select a beneficiary from a shortlist including Love Food Hate Waste, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Keep Wales Tidy. The shortlist had been chosen from 120 organisations that applied and one would be chosen for each region.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for organisations to partner with us and make a real difference,” said Tesco community director Greg Sage. “Our customers are the ones who will pay the charge, so we really wanted them to choose the partners that will benefit from the money.”

Tesco estimated that money raised from the levies would hit £1.8m. Both partnerships are set to run for 12 months.

Wales introduced a carrier bag charge in 2011, while Scottish retailers will have to start charging from October.
