Our mystery shopper had a ‘really positive experience’ at Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s picked up its second win in a row this week. The supermarket’s Dundee branch beat high-scoring rivals with 87 points, bolstered by a full basket.

The store had “very high standards” overall. It was clean, the aisles were free of obstructions and the fruit & veg looked “very fresh and appetising”.

Although our shopper “had to hunt people out” for help, they were “generally helpful”. One female staff member “seemed a little abrupt”, but this was tempered by Jack, who was “very helpful”, “extremely polite” and chatted while he walked our shopper to the peanuts.

Overall, our shopper had a “really positive experience” and will “return and shop here more often due to the high standards of cleanliness, availability and helpful team members”.

Asda in Newton Abbot will consider itself unlucky to finish second this week. In any of the previous four shops, its score of 83 would have been enough to clinch the win.

Like our winner, Asda picked up a perfect score for availability, and it did the same for shop floor service.

Our shopper was “really impressed” by the number of staff available and found it “easy” to get help when required. She mentioned Adrian, Faye, Kirsty and Martina by name. “In all cases, whether they walked me to the item or not, they all knew exactly what aisle and on which side I should look.”

She also enjoyed a “fun” hunt for the peanuts, which ended with “a young man” helping her get them down from the extra stock on the top shelf.

The store scored well on standards, too. Our shopper noted a “really colourful” display of plants and flowers and a “spectacular shelving unit full of huge garden gnomes”.

Tesco in Hattersley was the third store this week to break the 80-point barrier. With a score of 81, the only chink in its armour was availability. Two out-of-stocks and one not-stocked item resulted in a score of just 10 out of 20.

The store was another to excel on shop floor service. Although there was lots of restocking activity, staff were “all very diligent in making sure customers were not impeded while carrying out their tasks and were also happy to be approached”.

Our shopper also found most tills were staffed, meaning no long queues. The woman on the checkout was “very helpful”, going above and beyond when our shopper’s Tesco app was not working.

“The whole shopping experience was a pleasure, and I will be using this store again,” he summed up.

Waitrose in Wallingford came fourth with 77 points. It was hamstrung by a low availability score thanks to two out-of-stocks and two items not stocked – partly explained by its relatively small size. Our shopper also noticed gaps in fruit & veg and sparse shelves in the milk section.

The store scored well in all other areas. Our shopper had “a very enjoyable shopping experience” thanks to the “friendly and professional staff” and the “very calm” atmosphere.

Morrisons in Wakefield brought up the rear this week with a still respectable score of 68 points. Availability was below par with three out-of-stocks. Otherwise, our shopper found it to be a “bright, clean store” that was well stocked.

She was impressed by the “friendly, chatty and fast” member of staff at the checkout, who she awarded “top marks”, though “other colleague interactions could have been better”.
