How do we calculate
the Grocer 33?

The Grocer 33 is a weekly mystery shopping survey which reviews a basket of 33 items, tracking price, service and availability at the five leading grocery retailers: ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

The charts on the Grocer 33 home page provide an overview that looks at which store had the cheapest basket, the best service, the best availability and who is winning in each of these categories across the year so far.

Not only can you see this, but exclusive to members is the week’s detailed 33 list including promotions, out of stock products and what our mystery shoppers have to say when they compare service at the leading multiples. They compare the service and standards so you don’t have to!

The Grocer 33: Prices

On our prices page you can view the latest 33 selection of products and their prices at the big five multiples. You can also look back at previous weeks’ baskets going all the way back to June 2010.

The chart shows which products are – or have been – on promotion, any changes in price, products that are out of stock or not stocked and which was the cheapest.

Click on a product and you can see the history of pricing for that product across the year split by multiple. Information includes when they were on promotion, the type of promotion (for example, a multibuy discount), the highest and lowest price and how many weeks the product could be bought on deal.

The Grocer 33:
Store of the week

Our ‘Store of the week’ page lists out each week’s winner showing the store photo. When you click the title you see the full article including key information on the store such as when it opened, the size, market share and its nearest rivals as well as an interview with the store manager.

The interviews are really inspirational going into secrets of their success, how the store fits in with the community, what is working for them, what’s coming up in the future for them and their overall brand, how they gather customer feedback – even if they think the weather helps them with certain product lines – and so much more.
