Lidl overtook Aldi in sales last November but to keep going it needs to open more stores. It stands at 630. It wants to hit 1,500. But although Barbour ABI says Lidl issued three times as many planning applications as Aldi in the last quarter of 2015, smash and grab isn’t Hazlehurst’s style. Instead he’s targeting the lucrative South East and inside the M25.
