Will British crisp-lovers fork out almost four quid for a new super-premium snack?

Distributor Fayrefield Foods is hunting listings for San Nicasio Patatas Fritas. The Spanish crisps likely to sell for £3.49 to £3.99 for 190g are handmade with extra virgin olive oil, Catalan potatoes and Himalayan pink salt in the Andalucian mountains. A £3.99 rsp would be equivalent to £2.10 per 100g well above Tyrrells' and Burts' £1.89p for a 150g bag (£1.26/100g) and Walker's Extra Crunchy's £1.69 (£1.13/100g).

Fayrefield is targeting indie retailers but hopes supermarkets will eventually stock the brand. "San Nicasio is an authentic delicacy for cosmopolitan consumers who appreciate great taste, natural ingredients and provenance," said Fayrefield's Mike Coleman.

l Burts Chips has launched limited-edition pesto flavour crisps in 40g (rsp: 69p) and 150g bags (£1.89).
