The importer of an alternative to caviar believes that the ban on the global trade because of serious declines in the sturgeon population will generate big demand for its product.
Onuga is a caviar-lookalike product made from herring that has won a listing in Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Asda since its launch last month.
It costs £4 for a 50g pot, compared with around £150 for the same amount of Beluga or Sevruga caviar.
Importer Land & Sea has the sole UK rights to the Spanish product. MD Patrick Limpus said: “Caviar eggs melt in your mouth in a very pleasant way and Onuga does the same.”
