A cheaper, less complex inspection system for small suppliers has been launched by independent third party inspection service, EFSIS.
EFSIS said the new “common sense approach” for food safety assurance was required to ensure small producers complied with food safety regulations without being drowned in red tape.
The EFSIS/BRC Standard has 36 sections and costs £1,050 while the new Safe and Legal Standard has 20 sections and costs £500.
“As we went round retailers and manufacturers we realised there was a niche for a more straightforward system,” said Jackie Kerr, key account manager at EFSIS. “The EFSIS/BRC standard is complex and there are a lot of documentation requirements pertinent to larger manufacturers. But for the smaller producer, it can be a nightmare.
“We saw a need for a standard - the Safe and Legal Standard - which would ensure compliance with all food safety regulations and relevant legislation with a common sense approach, specifically designed for small operators.”
