Drinks distributor WaverleyTBS is counting the cost of the Hemel Hempstead oil fire, while local retailers and wholesalers are thanking their lucky stars after surviving relatively unscathed.
The explosion at the Buncefield oil distribution centre on December 11 resulted in the biggest fire in post-war Europe and the nearby Waverley depot and offices in Hemel Hempstead was one of the businesses to bear the brunt.
A spokeswoman for Waverley, a subsidiary of brewer Scottish & Newcastle, said management were allowed access to the site on Wednesday. Although damage to stock was not as bad as first feared, the impact on the fabric of the depot had been significant. Its main headache was that it could not reach its stock during the busiest period of the year. It is talking to suppliers about additional stock.
Marks and Spencer said it suffered some availability issues on Monday after it had to close its food depot in Hemel Hempstead.
