Dr Andrew Wadge has been confirmed as the Food Standard Agency’s director of food safety policy.

Wadge has been acting director of food safety policy since February and was previously head of the Agency’s chemical safety & toxicology division.

FSA chief executive Jon Bell said Wadge had considerable experience in food safety, with particular expertise in the toxicology of substances such as food chemicals and food additives. Bell added: “Since joining the Agency in April 2000, Wadge’s commitment and judgement have been an important factor in the development and success of the FSA. Under his direction policy will continue to ensure consumers’ interests and safety remain paramount.”

Wadge has been a government scientist since 1986, holding posts in the DoH. His responsibilities included work on the health effects of environmental pollution and leading the Food Chemical Safety Unit, providing input to the Committee on Toxicity.
