Chandra helps push turnover from £4m to £20m in six years

Anshu Chandra was a teacher in India before moving to Glasgow to study for an MBA in marketing.

Then, she says, she was drawn into the world of drinks.

A friend introduced her to the Kooner family, owner of the Compass Cash and Carry, which needed help in developing its licensed and impulse wholesale business.

Chandra started with the Nisa-Today’s member as a stock controller eight years ago and was promoted to buying manager two years later.

She says: “The company was not doing much in the market and had an annual turnover of about £4m.
“Since I became buying manager we are doing in excess of £20m.

“I deal with suppliers on an everyday basis but my role does not only involve buying.

“I have to create the selling focus and pass information down to the boys on the floor to give them the point of difference for each product.”

Chandra explains that her enthusiasm and passion for work drives her to come up with new ideas so that she can do the best she can for herself, her customers and the business.

She says: “Innovation is the mother of success. Our focus is on the customer and we have had to move with the times and bring in new ideas.”

The company recently invested £100,000 and has a new ordering and delivery service, as well as a new customer club.

Chandra hopes these initiatives will reward loyal customers and adds: “The market is very challenging, especially as a new cash and carry opened in Glasgow last year. However, I welcome the competition.
“It is good for the growth of any business and it keeps me thinking more and more so that I can come up with better ideas to increase productivity.”
