The Japanese market could be open by the end of the summer if experts give the go-ahead.
Japanese vet Sachiko Fuchinoue is inspecting the UK's industry and a positive report will see foot and mouth restrictions on British products lifted. Her visit follows a delegation to Japan led by Stewart Houston, chairman of the BPEX, in February.
Houston said: "Hopefully this will be the last piece in the jigsaw which will see the Japanese market re-opened."
BPEX plans a follow-up trade mission in the early autumn.
