"All segments of the winter ailments market are growing strongly in grocery and we expect this trend to continue with the opportunity to exploit advances in formulation technology and regulatory status," says a spokesman. Natural development The company is keeping a weather eye on the growth in herbal remedies, following Beechams entry into the herbal market last year with its Natural range. A recent Mintel survey among consumers indicated that attitudes towards herbal or natural remedies were becoming more favourable. "But whether this will result in a dramatic increase in sales growth remains to be seen," says a Warner-Lambert spokesman. "Although the herbal remedies market has shown growth over the last few years, the size of the category remains small compared with mainstream therapies." Smooth operator With multiples commanding an increasingly large slice of the OTC market, independent retailers are taking a closer look at best selling lines, including pain killers and cough and cold remedies, in order to maximise their profit potential. In the cough category must stock lines include adult, children's and a family brand. Among those, Benylin is now the number one selling grocery cough brand (source: AC Nielsen) with well over 30% market share. Independent retailers are now able to stock Benylin Chesty Coughs Non Drowsy for adults and Benylin Children's Chesty Coughs. "When asked to name the first cough remedy that comes to mind, consumers mentioned Benylin four times more often than the number two brand," says a spokesman.
