A Brazilian company targeting the UK market is set to become its nation's biggest lime producer.
According to Heiko Freitag, European agent for grower/packers Ita Citrus, the company has invested in 2,000 hectares of new land in the fast developing north-east of Brazil.
Speaking at IFE this week, Freitag said the company already had developed markets in Germany, and now believed the UK had untapped potential.
Most of its fruit is bought from growers in the San Paolo region where harvesting takes place in winter.
However, according to Freitag, the purchase "will provide year round continuity on irrigated land where we expect to be in commercial production in 18 months".
He also believed there was great potential to expand sales of other tropicals such as papaya and mango.
, not only in whole state but also prepared for the fresh fruit salad sector.
