Weetabix has pledged to reduce excess packaging and eliminate it where possible as part of its inaugural report into corporate social responsibility.

The document, drawn up with help from the Carbon Trust, sets out the company’s aim to reduce its carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency.

Measures to meet guidelines on nutrition and labelling have also been outlined. These include a pledge to exclude hydrogenated oils and artificial colours from its products.

Weetabix chief executive Ken Wood said the policy would help the company improve public health through good nutrition while protecting resources.

“Overall, this has been an exercise in realising we already do some good work in this arena but there are areas we can improve and we are making commitments to do so,” said Wood.

“We are going to take this one step at a time to implement a policy that will really make a difference.”
